10 Before 10. Making Porn a Normal Talk.
â
Sometimes itâs really intimidating to talk about pornography with your kids.â This â10 before 10â idea was inspired by Ginny with: @1000hoursoutside, who has so brilliantly quantified something that seems overwhelming.
â
You can do this! What about striving for 10 solid conversations about pornography before each of your kids hits age 10? Sure, more might be better, but just to give everyone a start. And, start early! Age 5 if you can (hereâs some help!). This ensures that your ideas about pornography are embedded in them long before that first exposure.â

You donât need to read them a research paper. Just talk! Iâve talked to thousands of parents about this topic. Some tips, tricks, ideas to get you started (and many of these work for kids older than age 10, too):

Ideas to Make Porn the Norm
â
â
Shoulder-to-shoulder (less intimidating)â .âš
â
Read their signs â look for openness. Readiness. â âš
â
Be patient. Wait for them.â âš
â
Car time. Meal time. Bedtime.â âš
â
Look for active times. Hands move = mouth movesâ .âš
â
Use age-appropriate words (hereâs a post that helps!).âš
â
Use a book.âš
â
Use drips instead of dousing (little chats)â .âš
â
Smile. Pray. Smile! â âš
â
Phrases like âDigital secrets â letâs avoid them!ââ âš
â
Give them a code word.â âš
â
Donât freak out! Donât freak out! (if they tell you)â âš
â
Steps: âPut it down. Tell someone!â*â âš
â
âNo matter what you see, you can tell me!ââ âš
â
âNo matter what you see, I still love you!ââ âš
â
âYou can always land safe and sound with me!ââ âš
â
Let 3-5 other trusted family members know.*â âš
â
Did I mention, âDonât freak out?â Yup!â
â
You are all amazing and I bet you have more amazing ideas! What other tips would you share with a nervous parent? Please comment!â
â
â â âš*If you create a process, like our âPut it down. Tell someone,â itâs really important that other, trusted adults know the process. What we donât want is my son bumping into porn on Grandmaâs iPad, him telling Grandma, and her freaking out, which communicates to Blake that he did the wrong thing. Super important!â We expand on this more in our post, âHow to Talk to a 5-Year-Old About Porn,â which shares multiple stories about how parents have handled the entire conversation.
â
If youâre wondering what the fallout can be when kids stumble and struggle with pornography, weâve identified five impacts that can truly change the direction of a young personâs life. Use these as motivation to get the prevention side right!

For a bit of a laugh, hereâs a video about making âporn the normâ from a recent talk at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills:

What if I have more questions? How can I stay up to date?
