LiveMe

Protect Young Eyes App Review

What is the LiveMe App?

Description: LiveMe (https://www.liveme.com/) is called one of the top broadcasting apps where users are able to meet stars, become stars, grow a fan base, meet friends, date, play games, and send virtual gifts in order to catch broadcaster’s attention. Getting noticed is a driving factor behind this app. “Find your true self and show off your talents,” states the app description.

Category: Social Networking

APP Store Rating: 17+ due to:

  • Infrequent/Mild Profanity of Crude Humor (we would argue, it’s frequent)
  • Infrequent/Mild Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References
  • Violence
  • Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes

What do parents need to know about LiveMe?

Addictive behavior runs rampant with this app. There is constant need to be glued to your screen either viewing broadcasts or shooting videos. When you start an account you are at Lv.1 (Level 1). Levels are based upon the number of videos watched, if the user has started their own broadcasts, and how many gifts are sent in order to gain more points and reach higher levels. Once certain levels are reached more gifts and effects are unlocked.

Self-esteem crushing. Users can get a false sense of popularity by how many views their live broadcast receives. The shallow nature of this app is sickening at best and downright disgusting at its worse. One customer wrote a review that stated: “I like living [live broadcasting] to people it makes me happy and it will make me popular…”

Sexual images and videos are readily available. The point of doing these live broadcasts is to gain as many views and followers as possible. So sometimes the riskier the behavior, the higher the “entertainment” value. This is user controlled content and if you are looking for it, porn is findable.

There are in-app purchases. By paying $19.99/month, you become a VIP member with certain perks. It’s all shallow and pointless.

Sexual predators are everywhere. We were contacted in May by an LA news station about an investigation into LiveMe videos being recorded of young girls and then being sold as child porn. Since then, LiveMe has deleted over 600k accounts in an effort to clean up the junk, but it’s too late. The pedophiles have arrived on the app and they aren’t going away. This also occurred on a similar app, Musical.ly, which we reported on two years ago.

The bottom line – is LiveMe safe?

This app is rated 17+ for a reason. No teen needs this app. There is too much at stake for our teens and too much they have to sort through in their day-to-day lives without the added drama, addiction, and worry this app brings. Teens are not going to be able to “find themselves” with this app but rather have a really good chance of getting very lost. To keep this and other unwanted apps off your child’s phone, keep the app store off!
