What is the Vigo Video (formerly Flipagram) App?

This app encourages all forms of artistic expression be utilized and celebrated and offers challenges and competitions in areas like dance, art, comedy, animals, beauty, lip-sync, etc.  It’s a form of Musical.ly for adults. The description in the app states “We’re looking for creative, high-quality Flipsters to feature and make famous. Show off your creativity & talent in challenges and tag #featuremyflip to get noticed!”

What do parents need to know about Vigo Video?

Followers and likes = privacy and popularity issues. There are instructions on how to remove unwanted followers from your account.

Sexual images and videos are accessible but not a ton of it. Some provocative flipsters will give instructions on how to connect to more explicit content on other apps. We’ve searched Flipagram using standard inappropriate search terms, and overall, there isn’t much inappropriate content compared to most social media sites.

In-app purchases are available. We just want parents to be aware.

There’s connection to other social platforms. This could potentially encourage unchartered exposure to undesirable content, as well as a desire to obtain access to some apps your child does not currently possess.

The bottom line – is Vigo Video safe?

We have a general rule at Protect Young Eyes that kids just don’t need most all forms of social media until they are 15.

Before that, they need to learn how to interact face-to-face so that their relationship templates with adults and peers are strong. If your child uses Flipagram, there aren’t a ton of risks compared to other social platforms – both Snapchat and Instagram are far worse in terms of their negative impact on tweens and teens. We believe it’s only a matter of time before more sexual content starts to infiltrate the app.

The best device advice we can give parents is to keep the app store turned off so that they don’t have access to apps you aren’t familiar with.
